Truth: I've spent most of the day listening to "Happy Little Pill" by YouTube star Troye Sivan. At 19 years old, he already has millions of followers on social media. Now, he is moving to transition from YouTube sensation to music stardom. His EP TRXYE is set to be released August 15. But for now, he has given us "Happy Little Pill."
Melancholy lyrics float over downtempo electronic beats to create a beautifully depressed song. A subdued Troye sings of feeling alone in a land of "cocaine dollar bills and my happy little pill." Like Lana del Rey, Troye Sivan manages to bring out the beauty in a seemingly cruel world.
On his tumblr, Troye writes, "I wrote this song during a bit of a rough time for someone super close to me, and for myself, and it still means as much to me as the day i wrote it, and i’m still as in love with it as the day i wrote it."
This is a good debut single from his upcoming EP. If "Happy Little Pill" is any indication about the direction of the rest of TRXYE, I am excited for us to listen to it in its entirety.
